At long last, Tanzania and Uganda have signed an agreement which will see the construction of a nearly 900-mile crude oil pipeline, dubbed the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). The deal was signed Sunday by the presidents of the two countries – Tanzania’s President John Magufuli and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.
The pipeline, estimated to cost $3.5 billion, will connect Ugandan oil fields to the Tanga Port in Tanzania. According to a tweet by Tanzania government spokesman Hassan Abassi, 80% of the pipeline will run through Tanzania.
