The tug Fahd collied with the LPG carrier Chinagas Legend in the Suez Canal on Saturday killing one crewmember and injuring five others. The tug’s hull was breached and the vessel sank following the collision. The LPG vessel was not damaged.
The head of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Admiral Ossama Rabiee, said that divers were able to quickly locate the tug. The body of one crewmember was recovered and five others were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
According to the SCA, the maritime salvage operation was completed efficiently and in record time without affecting the traffic through the Canal despite the challenges the salvage team had faced including strong water currents, zero visibility underwater and deep diving to depths of 27 meters.
