The much talked about Trans-Sahara Pipeline is under discussion once again as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Algeria, Jeremiah Hassan, expressed his country’s commitment to the pipeline project. Hassan said that the project was “not only viable but would also turn the economic fortunes around for the better.”
“This will open windows of opportunities to Nigeria. Many countries depend on gas to power their industries,” he was quoted as saying by the official News Agency of Nigeria on Monday. He also said that so far the project had attracted partners from the EU and Russia. The Ambassador said that the inclusion of the Russians in the project was a given as the country, overly blessed with gas reserves, already has experience in the pipeline side of the industry having a huge network of gas pipelines crossing the country.
If and when the Trans Sahara is built, it is estimated that the pipeline that it will cost around $13 billion, $10 billion for the pipeline and $3 billion for the gathering centers. It is envisaged that the pipeline would supply Europe with about 30 billion cubic meters per year.
