Sudanese Military Makes Power Grab

Monday, October 25, 2021

There has been a coup in Sudan with the Sudanese military dissolving the transitional government. On Monday morning, Sudan’s armed forces arrested Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok as he refused to publicly support the takeover. Hamdok, along with his wife and members of Sudan’s cabinet were taken to an undisclosed location.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, a general who headed the Sovereign Council, stated: “We guarantee the armed forces’ commitment to completing the democratic transition until we hand over to a civilian elected government … What the country is going through now is a real threat and danger to the dreams of the youth, and the hopes of the nation to build a nation whose features are starting to emerge.”

The US Embassy in Khartoum expressed concern, stating on its Twitter page “The U.S. embassy is gravely concerned by reports that the armed forces have taken action against Sudan’s civilian government, and condemns actions that are undermining Sudan’s democratic transition.” The Embassy went on to state: “We call on all actors who are disrupting Sudan’s transition to stand down, and allow the civilian-led transitional government to continue its important work to achieve the goals of the revolution.”

Civilians flooded the streets chanting in support of the coup. Elections have preliminarily set for July 2023.
