The CEO of Sonatrach, Toufik Hakkar, signed the company’s General HSE Declaration, with the objective of achieving “the best performance” in terms of Hygiene, Safety and the protection of the Environment, the group said in a statement on Tuesday.
This general declaration “reinforces Sonatrach’s willingness to do everything possible to achieve and maintain the best standards and performance in terms of health, safety and environmental protection,” states the national hydrocarbons company. Through this approach, Sonatrach “aims for excellence in HSE practices which makes it possible to meet internal and external expectations and the creation of added value,” the press release added.
In order to support its vision, Sonatrach relies on three fundamental values: Human Resources, Communication and Transparency, according to the new HSE policy.
Through the main axes of its general declaration of the HSE policy, Sonatrach reaffirms its commitment to give priority to the health and safety of workers, the protection of the environment, while ensuring continuous improvement and a preventive approach in this domain. It also undertakes to develop a system for the continuous identification and assessment of risks and to implement the necessary and appropriate measures for their mitigation.
Sonatrach also strives to ensure the security of its assets and to ensure that all risk management systems are constantly functional and effective.
No project will be launched before evaluating its environmental impacts. The NOC is committed to improving its facility and infrastructure integrity programs to prevent accidental events, leadership development and the commitment of all its managers to improve its performance related to Health, Safety and Security. environmental protection, as well as the involvement of all its employees for risk management, by developing an HSE culture based on information, training and feedback.
Through the Declaration, the group also wants to comply, wherever it operates, with legal and regulatory requirements in terms of health, safety and environmental protection, applicable to its field of intervention.
Sonatrach also intends to put in place the necessary measures aimed at an “excellent” level of compliance, responsibility and HSE performance of its partners and external companies.
The company will continue to improve its own emergency plans and commit the appropriate means and resources, to ensure a rapid, efficient and integrated response, in order to minimize the consequences of any accident or major event.
Sonatrach commits not to launch a project before evaluating its environmental impacts, and its social acceptability, and to put in place appropriate measures throughout its life cycle, to prevent and reduce negative impacts on health, safety and the environment, and the well-being of the surrounding populations.
Reducing its CO2 emissions is also a priority and Sonatrach will undertake to adopt the best industrial practices and implement the appropriate measures for an efficient and optimal use of natural resources, the prevention and reduction of pollution, as well as the compensation of negative impacts, in close consultation with the authorities. authorities and parties involved.
It also intends to reduce its carbon footprint by improving its energy and operational performance, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and developing and using low-carbon technologies and processes.
According to the Declaration, Sonatrach also undertakes to carry out its missions in a “responsible” and safe manner, by consulting all its external stakeholders on matters of mutual interest, as well as allocating the necessary and optimal resources to implement implement its policy and achieve its health, safety and environmental protection objectives.
