In a statement released on its website, Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources stated that it “strongly condemns Genel Energy’s illegal activities in Somalia and warns the potential risks to its investment and legal ramifications of carrying out illegal exploration in Somalia.”
Somalian officials are monitoring the situation in the breakaway territory and rejects Genel Energy‘s claims to any petroleum exploration rights in the region, claiming the company is in violation of Somalia’s “sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity.”
Somaliland is an autonomous region in northern Somalia. In 1991 the region broke away and declared its independence from Somalia. As yet, most governments do not recognize Somaliland as an independent nation although last March, leaders from the region met with Washington DC officials to plead their case for recognition.
Representative Muse Bihi Abdi stated that bilateral talks with Somalia were fruitless. “Somalia has demonstrated a complete lack of interest in meaningful dialogue,” … “Dialogue has failed to achieve its objectives,” Abdi told US officials at the time.
Back in 2019, Genel increased its stake in Block SL10B13 in northern Somaliland and later in 2021 farmed down its interest to OPIC Somaliland Corporation (OSC), a Taiwan-based CPC Corporation subsidiary.
