SNEPCO Announces Discovery on Bonga Field

Tuesday, May 9, 2006

A new discovery was announced on the Bonga field offshore Nigeria. The news of the oil and gas discovery came from Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO) who said that it had discovered new oil and gas wells from a drilling campaign launched in the prolific Bonga deep offshore field. "Shell Exploration and Production Company is pleased to announce exploration success at its deep water Bonga North oil and gas prospect, offshore Nigeria," the company said.

The Bonga North 2X was spud on October 25 in 3,343 feet of water and reached a total depth of 13,600 feet in December 2005. During drilling the well encountered about 300 feet of hydrocarbon bearing sands in several intervals.

While no firm number was given regarding the volume of oil and gas in the new discovery, the Bonga North 2X, along with the Bonga North 1XST strengthen SNEPCO’s resource base on this portion of the Bonga filed. The main Bonga field, which began production last November and had reached output level of about 200,000 bpd, is estimated to hold about 1 billion barrels of crude reserves.

Shell hold 55% equity interest in the field and its partners are ExxonMobil with 20%, Eni holds 12.5% and Total holds the remaining 12.5%.
