Robert Sirleaf has resigned his position as head of Liberia’s state run oil and gas firm NOCAL. Sirleaf is the son of Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. He also resigned as special advisor to the president.
The resignation comes just days after lawmakers suspended debate on new oil laws until the start of 2014. Liberian NGOs had urged lawmakers not to pass the laws, complaining of the lack of public consultation. The laws did make it past the senate but the House of Representatives put the vote on hold until after their break.
