According to media reports circulating over the last few days, Shell has made a significant oil and gas discovery offshore Namibia with the drilling of the Graff-1 well. Drilling got underway in December and preliminary reports suggest an estimated find of 250-300 million barrels of oil and gas equivalent, according to Reuters reporting.
The Graff-1 exploration well is located offshore Namibia in Block 2913A. The well is located in the Orange Basin at a water depth of about 2,000 meters. The well was drilled with the Valaris DS-10. Shell is the operator of Block 2913A and is partnered with QatarEnergy and state oil firm Namcor.
Due to its geographic location, explorers are optimistic about the potential for significant petroleum finds offshore Namibia. Just a few weeks before Shell spud its well, the Venus-1X offshore exploration well in Block 2913B (PEL 56) was spud by TotalEnergies and partners.
