Shell Gets Nod to Proceed with Seismic Offshore South Africa

Tuesday, December 7, 2021

A South African High Court made the decision to allow super major Royal Dutch Shell to conduct seismic surveys offshore South Africa. Environmentalists, including Greenpeace, had petitioned to have the seismic program halted, but the court ruled in favor of Shell, citing lack of data supporting the program would cause damage to the environment.

In November 2020 Shell acquired a 50% working interest and operatorship of the Transkei & Algoa blocks off the Eastern Cape from Impact Oil & Gas.

Environmentalists may have their say yet as Sustaining the Wild Coast, a group representing communities in the region, filed a separate complaint to the court last Thursday to halt the seismic survey.
