Search and Rescue Halts Offshore Nigeria-One Still Missing

Monday, June 3, 2013

The bodies of 10 of the 12 crew members aboard the Jascon 4 tug boat when it sunk offshore Nigeria on May 26 have been recovered.

Sea Trucks Group said in a statement the search and rescue operation, underway since May 26, was brought to a halt for safety reasons. The vessel, Jascon 4,which is located some 30 meters under water in an upside down position, became so unstable that the risk of injury to Sea Trucks’ rescue divers has become unacceptably high.

Since rescue operations began ten bodies were recovered, with one crew member still missing. There was one survivor, Okene Harrison, who was brought to the surface safely and continues to respond to treatment.

Jacques Roomans, the CEO of West African Ventures, a Sea Trucks Group company, commented: “The families of all crew members have been informed of the outcome of the rescue operation and West African Ventures will continue to give all support possible to the families of our deceased and missing colleagues. We extend our deepest sympathy to all of them.”
