RWE Announces New Egypt GM, Investment, and Sidi Salem Success

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

At a press conference held in Cairo on May 11, RWE Dea announced Hans-Hermann Ecke as the new General Manager for the company’s Egypt branches. He is replacing Hans-Hermann Andreae who was appointed to RWE Dea’s head office in Hamburg, Germany.

Andreae has been stationed in Egypt on behalf of RWE Dea since 2003, initially as General Manager of the Suez Oil Company (SUCO), a JV of RWE Dea and the Egyptian state-owned corporation Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), and from 2006 as General Manager for RWE Dea’s Egyptian country organization.

In addition, the company confirmed that while market conditions were strained, RWE will uphold its investment plans. "Our strategic objective remains to double production of crude oil and natural gas", said Christoph Schlichter, Senior Vice President of Production in North Africa. "Our activities in Egypt play an important part in this regard."

A substantial share of investments will be channeled into extensive exploration and production projects in Egypt. "In 2009, we plan to make investments of about €230 million in Egypt, about 20% more than only last year, explained Andreae.

In recent years, RWE Dea already managed to considerably extend its activities in Egypt thanks to major gas finds and new concessions, especially in the highly prospective Nile Delta. Plans are now under way to bring the resources discovered into production without delay. In 2008, RWE Dea produced roughly 20,000 barrels of oil equivalents per day (boepd) via the Suez Oil Company (SUCO), a JV established with EGPC.

RWE also made an announcement regarding its Disouq concession in the Egyptian onshore Nile Delta; the Sidi Salem South East 1x well found the Messinian formation gas bearing for the fifth time.

The Disouq concession covers an onshore area of 5,375 sq km within the densely populated farmland of the Nile Delta region of Egypt. The Sidi Salem South East -1x well is the eighth well to be drilled by RWE Dea in the license. It is located 11.5 km southwest of the North West Sidi Ghazy-1x discovery, drilled by RWE Dea in 2009. Following the five successful Messinian wells, the sixth exploration well (Disouq – 2x) will be drilled to test another potential Messinian structure in addition to the basal Pliocene sand of the Kafr El Sheikh formation.

Andreae noted that RWE had a busy year in the North African country producing 20,000 boepd with the additional production from new wells in the Western Desert. Gas discoveries in the Nile Delta, prepared to be developed in the “near future,” will continue the company’s climb.
