Chevron is finalizing plans to begin drilling a relief well to seal its burning well offshore Nigeria. The company saw a fire on the KS Endeavor, presumably killing two workers who could not be found. “Based on the condition of the well, the safest way to control it is to drill a relief well that will kill the well at depth,” the company said in a statement.
At this time no rig structure can be seen above water and there is no oil spilled as result of the incident. “With this gas flow, fine silt and mud on the seabed floor is disturbed and rises to the surface,” the statement read. “Discoloration of the water is visible near the wellsite.”
The company also reported that it has hired members of a local community as beach walkers to monitor the shoreline. “No impacts to the beach have been reported,” the company said.
The cause of the incident remains undetermined and an investigation is ongoing.
