Pirates boarded the Methane Princess LNG carrier which was anchored offshore the capital of Malabo. The attack took place during the early morning hours on Saturday.
Most of the crew escaped unharmed however, there are conflicting reports as to whether one or two crewmembers were taken hostage. Reports have it that there was one injury. In a conflicting account, AWP reported that the pirates kidnapped one crewmember and one Equatorial Guinean national employed by the terminal operator EG LNG. The EG LNG employee escaped, according to AWP’s report.
Neither Marathon, the EG LNG operator, or Golar, the LNG vessel operator, have released a statement on the incident as yet.
