Sierra Leone’s All People’s Congress (APC) candidate Samura Kamara, faced off against Julius Maada Bio of the opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) in March 7 elections. Neither candidate gained the 55% of votes needed to win outright so a run-off was scheduled. Bio won the run-off by a narrow margin, garnering 51.81%.
Former soldier and military ruler Bio, who briefly ruled the country in 1996, was sworn in on April 4 in a Freetown hotel. Karama says he will challenge the results due to irregularities.
In March, Sierra Leone’s High Court Justice, A. R. Mansaray, placed an injunction delaying the presidential run-off election scheduled for March 27. The delay was to further investigation into reported corruption can be conducted as well as a review of the electoral system itself.
