Oil Tanker Explosion Kills At Least 42 in Kenya

An oil tanker traveling on one of Kenya’s main highways crashed and exploded into flames. The fire engulfed nearby vehicles in flames and according to reports from the country at least 42 people died.

The tanker rammed into vehicles on a highway north of Naivasha then exploded on December 10, an official with the National Disaster Management Authority said.

At a news conference Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Irunfu Nyakera, said that according to the information received, there were 13 vehicles involved. Nyakera also revealed that at the time of the news conference, 33 bodies had been recovered, although other sources on the scene had the number higher and said there were still bodies trapped in the cars.

In a Reuters report, an official in Naivasha said 50 people were being treated in several hospitals for burns, eight of them in a serious condition.
