Monday, June 8, 2009

Two men, Dan Etete and Gaius Obaseki, are being detained in reference to the $180 million Halliburton bribe scandal according to Mike Okiro of the Presidential Investigation Committee.

Etete, former Petroleum Minister, and Obaseki, former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Group Managing Director, were reportedly held after being questioned for over nine hours in Abuja.

Apparently the two men are not the only suspects the government panel have decided to question as there are another five on the list who will be questioned.

The committee is also looking to talk to Jeffery Tessler, a Briton who has been labeled as the main participant in the scandal. Nigeria’s President, Umaru Yar’Adua, has given the committee permission to enlist the help of INTERPOL to arrest Tessler and bring him to Nigeria to answer questions on the illegal deal.

The committee is also waiting to speak to a former Head of State allegedly named in the scandal who is out of the country for medical treatment.
