Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is encouraging Japanese investors to invest in Mozambique’s ample natural gas projects and said he is committed to assisting the country in its counter terrorism efforts to get stalled projects moving again.
Kishida made his comments last week while visiting the capital city Maputo, where he met with Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique. The two discussed bilateral relations and strengthening cooperation, with energy supply heavy on Kishida’s agenda, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
Kishida also met with TotalEnergies’ representative Maxime Rabilloud to receive a briefing on the Mozambique LNG Project. Mitsui & Co. and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) have invested in the project while the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) has provided loans.
Japan, the world’s largest importer of liquified natural gas (LNG), would benefit from such a partnership in the sub-Saharan country’s gas industry. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Japan has 37 LNG import terminals and its long-term gas security policy relies on diversifying its long-term supply contracts and on ensuring these contracts include enough flexibility to increase imports during an emergency.
Mozambique is well-positioned to make supply deals with Japan, holding an estimated 100 Tcf of natural gas reserves, but first it must get its security situation under control.
