Kenya and Tanzania Sign Long-Awaited Natural Gas Pipeline Deal

Wednesday, May 5, 2021

It is official, the Mombasa-Dar es Salaam natural gas pipeline from Kenya to Tanzania will be constructed. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta made it official Tuesday, signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) documents in Nairobi.

The pipeline will help both countries supply much needed energy to their populations and it is hoped to become the start of improved bilateral relations and cooperation following the death of President John Magufuli in March which saw then VP Suluhu Hassan become president.

President Suluhu Hassan commented on the MoU: “That is a long-term project and we are thankful that today we have signed an agreement and what remains is implementation. We have agreed on the need to ease the transportation of key energy resources and we have reached one such understanding on the transportation of gas. What we need to do now is start implementing the Dar es Salaam-Mombasa gas pipeline project.”
