Ghana’s Akufo-Addo Wins Second Term

Friday, December 11, 2020

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has been re-elected to another term garnering 51.6% of the vote in a very tight election, squaring off with former president John Mahama. Most observers say the election was free, fair and well organized, despite some claims of “military pressure.”

Unfortunately, five people were killed in election violence and many more injured. According to the Ghanaian Police Service, more than 60 incidents of election violence were recorded during Monday’s vote.

This is the third time Mahama and Akufo-Addo have faced off in a presidential election, running against each other in 2012 when Mahama won with 50.7% of the vote and in 2016 when Akufo-Addo secured 53.6% of the vote.

Mahama has yet to concede the election with his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging irregularities
