According to reports, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), is confirming an explosion at a production facility in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 40. OML 40 is operated by Elcrest Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited. State firm NNPC, the parent company of NPDC, released a statement saying the explosion happened while carrying out production evacuation at the Gbetiokun Early Production facility.
Around 10,000 barrels per day of production is shut-in as a marine tanker was significantly damaged.
Kennie Obateru, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC said in a statement that there were no fatalities or injuries. He also said no significant spills were caused by the incident. “There was, however, significant damage to the marine storage vessel, MT Harcourt, which will impact production by about 10,000 barrels of oil per day. NNPC has since commenced investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident with a view to averting future occurrence,” he said
