Ethiopia Switches on First Turbine at Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam

Monday, February 21, 2022

Abiy Ahmed Ali, the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, yesterday announced that Africa’s largest power plant, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam’s first turbine began generating power.

“This is good news for our continent and the downstream countries with whom we aspire to work together. As Ethiopia marks the birth of a new era, I congratulate all Ethiopians!,” Ahmed Ali said.

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is a multi-billion-dollar hydropower plant on the River Nile that has long been a point of contention with neighbors Sudan and Egypt who share the water from this source and fear it will cause their countries water shortages.  Ahmed Ali looked to reassure those nations that they have no intention of harming their interests.

“Ethiopia’s main interest is to bring light to 60% of the population who is suffering in darkness, to save the labor of our mothers who are carrying wood on their backs in order to get energy,” Abiy said.

The first two turbines from GERD will generate a total of 750 megawatts which is approximately 11.63% of the entire project’s planned capacity.
