Release–Engen succeeds BP as top forecourt brand in Sunday Times survey

Engen Petroleum, the country’s leading marketer of petroleum products and convenience, is this year’s Sunday Times Top Brands survey winner in the retail forecourt (petrol station) arena, making it the number one forecourt brand in the country.

Vukile Zondani, general manager: Engen Sales & Marketing says Engen has had its eye on the coveted Sunday Times title for some time and is honoured to have reached the top spot.

“We are now at the point where our brand perception matches our market leadership, and we’ll certainly do everything in our power to stay on top,” he says.

After a steady climb up the ‘brand ladder’, Engen took joint first spot with BP in 2010. Pierr Roodt, Engen’s retail marketing manager, says: “We believe our success has come as a result of tailoring our marketing strategy and extensive offerings to our various market segments. With customer service key in the petroleum industry, I further believe that the extensive training conducted with our forecourt staff is paying off. Engen will continue to focus on the needs of our customers, and in so doing keep earning the recognition bestowed on us by them.”

Initiatives that have earned Engen kudos in all consumer segments include more inclusive brand advertising, as well as a reinvigoration drive of retail livery and offerings. In addition, the attraction of Engen’s brand partners, such as Woolworths, Wimpy and Steers, has made Engen more top-of-mind.

Roodt says the win is particularly gratifying as earlier in the year the company won the Sunday Times Generation NeXt youth poll as SA’s Coolest Petrol Station. “This result was a testimony to our efforts to appeal to a wider base. We are immensely proud to appeal to the youth, as with all our other segments. All in all we think we have a great foundation to build on.”
