An oil leak from the Shuqair-Mostorod pipeline caused the infrastructure to burst out in flames on Tuesday, resulting in 17 injuries. A spark from a passing car on the busy Ismalia Desert Road, a major highway leading out of Cairo that traverses the pipeline, ignited the crude, according to a statement from the Ministry of Petroleum.
The pipeline’s valves were immediately closed in the area of the blaze and the flames were brought under control, a statement by the Petroleum Pipelines Company added. The cause of the leak is under investigation.
