Chadian President Killed on Battlefield

Wednesday, April 21, 2021

President Idriss Deby of Chad has died of wounds suffered during a visit to front-line troops battling an insurgent rebel group, the country’s military announced Tuesday. The militants have vowed to take over the country.

The military stated that President Deby was actually in combat with the troops and “had fought heroically but was wounded in a battle” but later died of his wounds.

The rebel group Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), which is based across the northern frontier with Libya, attacked a border post on election day and then advanced hundreds of kilometers to the south.

The military swiftly named President Deby’s 37-year-old son, Mahamat, as the country’s interim leader. After three decades in power, the 68-year-old Deby was just declared the provisional winner of an election on Monday that would have seen him in power for another six years. The military says Mahamat will head an 18-month transitional council, which is contrary to the constitution which calls for the National Assembly to take over until new elections can be held.

FACT declares it will not allow the handover of power. “Chad is not a monarchy. There can be no dynastic devolution of power in our country,” the rebels said in a statement. “The forces of the Front for Change and Concord are heading toward N’Djaména at this very moment. With confidence, but above all with courage and determination.”

In a statement, FACT named five high-ranking military officials who it said were also killed, and 10 others that were wounded.
