Africa’s World Cup: Bafana Bafana Scores First Goal of Tourney

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

The World Cup kicked-off on June 11 in South Africa; the first Cup to be held on the African continent. Six African teams in total made it to the World Cup, Algeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa. So far the teams from the continent have seen a mixed bag of results.

The starting match pitted the host team South Africa, against Mexico. The South African team technically scored the first goal of the World Cup, although Mexico had put the ball in the goal earlier but an offsides ruling was called. ‘Bafana Bafana’ started off the Cup with a credible and exciting draw against Mexico. South Africa faces Uruguay today.

Next to hit the grass was Nigeria, who unfortunately came in on the downside of a 1-0 match against Argentina. Nigeria plays Greece next, another team who fell in its first match up. Algeria also fell in their first match to Cinderella team Slovenia. The Algerians play England on Friday.

Ghana conquered Serbia with a 1-0 win. The West African team will next face Australia, who came in with a 0-4 loss against Germany in its first match. Cameroon fell to Japan 0-1 and faces Denmark this weekend. The last African team to play its first match was Cote d’Ivoire. There had been some concern on whether the team’s star player, Didier Drogba. would be able to play. While Drogba did not start he did come in late in the game, alas Cote d’Ivoire had to settle for a a scoreless draw and one point. The team will face powerhouse Brazil in the next round.
